Chapter 29

Another step that went along with giving up the pills and eating so-called real food was exercising. Changing his diet wouldn’t be enough for Elvis to lose the excess poundage he carried. He needed a solid cardio and resistance training to regain his physical prowess.

A large room in Cameron Ogilvie’s mansion served as a gymnasium.

Fatu had Elvis lifting weights on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and doing cardio on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Sundays were the only day Elvis wasn’t required to work out.

The normally silent Fatu actually spoke during the workouts, but seldom more than two words: “More” and “Again.” Other than that, he simply pointed and directed Elvis to the different weight machines.

The first week had been rough. The upper body strength Elvis once had, especially when he served in the Army, no longer existed. He needed to rebuild his muscles. Being overweight didn’t help.

But after a week and a half, Elvis noticed his strength increasing. He could see muscle tone returning to his arms and legs. The grueling workout schedule Fatu had created was producing results.

A month into things, Elvis decided to incorporate his previous martial arts routine into his training.

“You know karate?” Elvis asked Fatu.

“Judo,” Fatu responded.

It made sense. Being built like a small boulder, judo would appeal more to Fatu, as it involved more grappling and wrestling than karate. Part of Elvis’s motivation in asking if the Islander knew karate was because he always enjoyed showing off his skills and training others. But with Fatu knowing judo, that presented its own challenge.

“You wanna spar?” Elvis asked.

Fatu responded not with words, but by breaking into a judo fighting stance. Elvis smiled. He always enjoyed sparring, especially with a seemingly unmovable foe like Fatu.

The two went at it for the next fifteen minutes. Elvis had speed and skills. Fatu had strength and stamina. They were evenly matched. Neither could overcome the other. Fatu’s endurance finally bested Elvis. As Elvis tired, Fatu got a hold of him and threw the clone across the room.

That also happened to be the moment Cameron stepped into his gym.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he yelled.

Fatu looked at Cameron and didn’t say a word. Elvis could see Cameron was about to blow his stack at the bodyguard turned personal trainer, and intervened.

“Don’t be mad at him, Mr. Ogilvie,” Elvis said. “I’m the one who asked him to spar.”

“To spar? Are you crazy? I didn’t bring you back so you could break your neck pretending you’re Jackie Chan.”

“Who?” Elvis asked.

“Never mind. Lift weights, jog on the treadmill, sweat to the oldies, but no more sparring,” Cameron said. Then he turned to Fatu. “I don’t care what he says—if I catch you doing something like that again, you’re going to be out on your ass, fathead.”

Cameron stormed out of the gym.

Elvis looked over to Fatu.

“Sorry ’bout that,” Elvis said.

Fatu responded with a grunt.
